We always wish the web host will provide the best backup application for free and allow their user to perform site backup or restore at their will. It should be flexible, powerful, and functional. All the top web hosts are now offering various backup restore service for free and right now we are looking into their backup services and features.
Is free backups tool included?
Yes, all their web hosting plans include the best backup and restore service. Our shared web hosting plan is with the default cPanel backup utility and the extra backup wizard that only found here.
For starter, we are using the Backups tool to perform site backup which including files and database backup. From this Backups tool, we can create a complete home directory backup or perform a MySQL database backup. Alternatively, we can download Email forwarder. In this Backups tool, there is restore service too.
The second backup tool is the Backup Wizard that is available for free as well. This is a more powerful step-by-step wizard that simplify the backup service. Here are the steps
- Choose backup or restore service. We choose the backup service.
- Choose full or partial backup. We choose the full backup.
- Download the backup file. This will generate full backup at selected destination. We can choose to receive Email once the backup file is generated.
In this Backup Wizard, we can perform various types of backup which including
- Home directory backup
- MySQL database backup
- Email forwarding configuration backup.
- Email filter configuration backup.
All these backup files once generated can be kept at our own offline storage or USB drive. When necessary, we can restore those files back to web hosting account and revert back to previous files, data and setting.
We are testing Backup Wizard
We just run a backup copy of settings, files, and database. To do this, we login to control panel > backup wizard. To run the full backup of my website, we were asked to enter email address to get informed once the backup files is ready. Because the full backup takes time at server, and the backup path will be sent to our email once available for downloads.
After few seconds, we received the email from cpanel@hostgatorreview.org and inside contains all the progress and status of the backup. From the log, it show that backup is completed for: reseller setting, cPanel setting, mail accounts, crons, subdomain, addon domains, parked domains, MySQL database etc. And all the files are now ready for download at home/backup……tar.gz. So, later FTP login to server and perform the downloads.
